Reading Wednesday
Oct. 2nd, 2019 06:56 pmIt's only been two months since I was last here, I'm improving!
Anyway, books!
Mostly I am back to reading the Foreigner series. after a long gap over the summer. I'm up to book eight now, Pretender, and they continue to be excellent. Cherryh's worldbuilding is amazing, to the point where I actually gasped over one character calling a different character by a certain honorific, because the implications of that were a) big, and b) something that I understood because her world and her societies and her characters are so complete. I am constantly delighted by these books, they are so good.
I love, though am also distressed by, how Bren is so incredibly competent and good at what he does and yet also eternally anxious about it. Several times in this current book he has been complimented by people and managed to take it as an insult and be very stressed about it, and I am having emotions about this.
Since I last talked about the Foreigner series, there has been a space race, Bren and co went to space and then went into deep space looking for a previously thought destroyed human base, made contact with another alien species who had previously only had violent encounters with humans (and then Bren manages to communicate with them first non-verbally, and then verbally, in the space of about three days, and it is amazing; book six in general is filled with everyone being amazingly competent), and then returned back to the atevi (and human) planet only to discover that the atevi government had been violently overthrown. No we are in the series of three books that could so far be subtitled 'Bren tries desperately to hand his report in and then have a nap' neither of which he has been allowed to do because people keep trying to kill him and others around him. It's very stressful and he really needs a hug.
I do have several library ebooks that have just come in, including Jeannette Ng's Under the Pendulum Sun, so it's probably time for a shift in gears for a bit.
